A cleaning company launched from a couple’s conservatory 30 years ago has won its current boss a major industry award.

CJ Micallef, the daughter of the founders of ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Manchester, has won a Great British Franchisee Award – the highest honour in the franchising world.

The Great British Franchisee Awards

Organised by franchising staple whichfranchise, Great British Franchisee status recognises the ‘crème de la crème of Britain’s franchisees’ for excellence in their industry, customer satisfaction and growth, and, in many cases, how the business owners coped during the pandemic.

The awards, now in their third year, have seen ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services franchises awarded each consecutive year, with CJ Micallef joining Chris Blewitt and Siva Kugathas as GBFA awardees from our network, and 14 of Britain’s finest franchisees this year.

How it started

ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Manchester has grown from one couple’s dream, thought up in a conservatory, to a thriving business that employs more than 300 staff with a turnover of more than £3 million, and CJ expects to hit £4 million soon.

When CJ’s parents bought the franchise to provide cleaning services in the city centre and South areas of Manchester in 1992, it took a year to make a profit.

It went on to become the top ServiceMaster franchise four times in a single year, and CJ’s parents won the HSBC-backed Franchisee of The Year Award from the Daily Express in 1999.

Going above and beyond

They took the bold step of expanding their territory during the recession of 2008 and were rewarded with a loyalty that has seen many of their cleaners remain with them for more than 10 years.

“As a sector with a high staff turnover rate, achieving such feats of employee dedication within the cleaning industry is exceptional, “says CJ.

“We deliver cleaning services to more than 200 customers on 265 sites a day – and that will rise to 664 sites from this year, following our success in winning a contract from another large housing association.

“We were hit hard by the pandemic. Almost 60% of our client base suspended operations overnight and many of those clients didn’t reinstate cleaning services until June, which meant we lost more than three months’ revenue.

“The short-term impact of COVID was further compounded by the loss of more than 10 contracts totalling half a million.

“Operating under uncertain and fluctuating circumstances, we rose to the challenge. All of our Head Office staff returned from furlough and we restructured our team at director level.

“To accommodate our growth, three full-time mobile cleaners provide vital cover for our growing customer base and we now have a fleet of 17 vehicles.”

About CJ

CJ, who joined the company after working for McDonald’s, Sainsbury’s and Starbucks, says her parents started the business after spotting a gap in the market.

“Cleaning was classed as a commodity, had little personalisation and value set upon it, and cleaning staff were viewed as invisible, as opposed to an individual with a purpose.

Therefore, my parents decided to create a niche in the market centred around quality cleaning services rather than price.

We’re now a business that other ServiceMaster franchisees turn to for support, advice, problem-solving and knowledge.”

How business success led to an overseas Christmas for ServiceMaster AAA.

2022 was a year of success for the owner of ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services AAA Siva Kugathas.

From winning and judging awards – including being crowned a Great British Entrepreneur and cleaning up at ServiceMaster Live – to taking part in multiple initiatives to support the local community, there’s been no shortage of activity for Siva and his team.

So, a trip abroad to commemorate the holidays certainly didn’t go amiss!

As part of a Christmas Conference and to celebrate all of the various successes and say thank you for all of their hard work, Siva took his senior leadership team to Antalya in Turkey last month.

The conference

When the team arrived in Turkey, it was time for a traditional dress evening full of celebration and anticipation for the conference, which Siva says created great excitement with guests at the hotel.

The next day, Siva shared 2022 results and unveiled plans & strategies for 2023.

This also involved a session on retaining and growing customers, followed by an evening Awards session, meal and drinks to celebrate and thank those who went above and beyond for ServiceMaster AAA in 2022.

The trip was tied off the next day with a full day to explore Antalya and a final evening meal, after which the team danced the night away before their flight home the next day.

The impact

Now back from Turkey, Siva says that he wanted to take his team overseas as an opportunity to bring everyone together.

With a vast territory covering many different areas in the country and staff based in separate offices nationwide, Siva says his goal with the conference was partly to bring the team together and get them working as a unit.

He says it was great to see his staff in a different environment, which enabled him to see how he can support them in a work setting and reward them for their hard work this year.

He adds that the trip was great fun and that it was lovely that everyone got to share an experience, socialise and get together, which, with such a vast team, doesn’t happen very often!

Over the ten years, there have been a number of big names to receive accolades, including Alan and Juliet Barratt of Grenade, Shaun Pulfrey of Tangle Teezer and Diary of a CEO host Steven Bartlett. Many previous winners have gone on to sit on the expert judging panel for the 2022 programme.

The tenth-anniversary awards also included a brand new category – the John Caudwell Blaze Your Own Trail Award recognises organisations and individuals providing non-traditional routes into employment through apprenticeships, on-job training and work experience placements. The award was added as part of a new partnership between the programme and the Phones4U founder’s charity Caudwell Children.

Business owners Chris and Sue Blewitt from ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services North East recently attended a charity ball at The Hilton, Gateshead.

The event was to raise funds for one of their favourite charities: The Great North Air Ambulance Service.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (or GNAAS) brings pioneering pre-hospital care to the scene, rescuing hundreds of severely injured or ill patients every year.

However, despite doing such vital work, they are not NHS-funded.

So, Chris and Sue joined 17 friends and neighbours to support this worthy cause for an enjoyable evening.

Over £50,000 was raised on the night for the service, which operates right across the region where ServiceMaster North East operates.

This money will go a long way in ensuring the staff and patients of this worthy charity get the money and support they need to carry on through these uncertain times.

Hard work pays off for two of our cleaners from ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services AAA.

At ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services, we work hard to constantly deliver our bespoke and expert cleaning services to a range of commercial clients across the UK. Not only does this include office premises, car showrooms and educational facilities, but also medical services premises like doctor’s surgeries.

One such surgery is the Weelsby Medical Centre in Grimsby, a regular client of the Yorkshire branch of ServiceMaster Clean AAA. In cases such as the cleaning that is required for the medical centre, our technicians work hard to keep the hygiene standards of the practice as high as possible to protect the staff and patients from the spread of germs and minimize the risk of infection. This involves a range of services, from disinfecting surfaces, to even using our advanced Capture and Removal Cleaning system, which utilises microfiber technologies to dramatically decrease airborne dust and bacteria.

This May, our long-anticipated ServiceMaster Live event, which is a gathering of franchisees from across the ServiceMaster UK brand family – saw franchisees and their teams recognised for their hard work in customer service, sales, and marketing efforts, resilience, growth and more over the past year. The awards ceremony, which took place at the close of a jam-packed day full of connections, networking and inspiring presentations, saw ServiceMaster Clean Newbury win the highly coveted North Star Invest award for investments in their business and the local community.

ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Newbury was owned and managed by Nick Dee Shapland for 30 years, during which time he established a growing community of staff and clients who relied upon and delivered his trademark professional and bespoke contract cleaning services. The owners of ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Warwick, Michal Kawerski and Dariusz Kowalik have won the prestigious Rookie of the Year award at this year’s ‘ServiceMaster Live’ event.

ServiceMaster Live, which took place this May, is an annual gathering of franchisees from across the ServiceMaster UK brand family. This has been the first time the conference has been able to run since 2019 due to the limitations to public gatherings brought in to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Now finally together again, the event saw franchisees and their teams recognised for their hard work in overall customer service, sales, marketing efforts, resilience in the face of hardships, charity and community work and more, in an awards ceremony at the close of the day. It was a first-time win for Michal and Dariusz from ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Warwick, who began their business during the pandemic and amidst lockdowns in August of 2020. Despite the challenges that came with starting a business in such difficult and uncertain times, the pair were able to rise to the occasion and prove worthy winners of the ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Rookie of the Year award.

Michal & Dariusz came to ServiceMaster with previous experience of owning a commercial and domestic cleaning company. Michal has built himself from the ground up, beginning his career in the cleaning industry as a daily cleaner before becoming a supervisor. When he then began his own cleaning business, Michal was struck by how the industry was evolving. He says he witnessed the change in attitudes to cleaning due to the COVID pandemic as he saw more and more people recognise the importance of regularly cleaning and sanitising their premises. Michal and Dariusz knew they could do more, and set their sights on growing a bigger and better business. And although Michal and Dariusz knew the industry and the processes that came with it, they also knew they didn’t want to enter into the unknown alone, and wanted the support and backing of a well-known brand. Michal was already intimately familiar with the ServiceMaster Clean brand as a result of working within our network before for one of our franchises, so the pair knew that with the backing of the ServiceMaster Clean brand, they could grow a truly thriving business.

ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services AAA owner Siva Kugathas has taken home multiple awards from this year’s annual ServiceMaster conference – ServiceMaster Live!

The conference, which took place this May, was a gathering of franchisees from across the ServiceMaster UK brand family and culminated in an awards ceremony at the end of the day. This saw franchisees and their teams recognised for their hard work in overall customer service, sales, marketing efforts, resilience in the face of hardships, charity and community work and more.

Siva is no stranger to awards, having won multiple growth and business awards since starting his journey with ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services back in 2017. Siva purchased ServiceMaster Clean Guildford 5 years ago and saw it as an ideal opportunity to take the established business to the next level. And he certainly has, winning a string of very notable awards including for Business Person of the Year and was one of the first-ever Great British Franchisee of the Year winners back in June 2021 as well as a win from a member of his team, Kinga Derenowska, who also recently won a Global Business Excellence Award. Siva has now added to this list of accolades the ServiceMaster Marion E Wade Award for Franchisee of the Year.

The owner of ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services North East is celebrating having won the prestigious Award of Excellence at ServiceMaster Live!

‘ServiceMaster Live!’, which took place this May, was a gathering of franchisees from across the ServiceMaster Ltd. brand family. Franchisees from each network came together to learn from one another and celebrate each other’s successes in an awards ceremony at the end of the day.

This included the presentation of the coveted Award of Excellence, awarded to none other than Chris Blewitt of ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services North East. This is given to a franchisee that has proven to exemplify the ServiceMaster tenet of the pursuit of excellence.

Chris has owned and managed his business for four years. He has acquired an excellent reputation among his clients for providing professional cleaning services during this time. This was initially across Durham and Teesside. However, he also developed this by expanding his territory and substantially growing his business by covering a much larger area early last year. As Chris says,

“We now cover the whole North East region.’’

Upon embarking on his journey, Chris’s focus was not only on growing his business but also on developing his workforce and creating more local jobs. Not only has he done this – as he now employs 124 people – but Chris also truly embodies the ServiceMaster ethos of going Above and Beyond by always taking time to provide help and support to other franchisees within the network.

All about ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services AAA’s ongoing work with YMCA DownsLink Group 

ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services AAA in Guildford is continuing its ongoing support of YMCA DownsLink Group by supporting its Room Sponsorship Scheme at Guildford Foyer.

 

The sponsorship will last for the length of a year and is part of the YMCA DownsLink Group’s supported accommodation project that provides a safe place to live for young people in a housing crisis.

Siva Kugathas, owner of ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services AAA has completed the 200 mile challenge for Run for the Trees for The National Forest

Siva completed the challenge of running 200 miles in February and was also joined by, Roxana Nae who also ran 200 miles, Joshua Damm who ran 50 miles, Kinga Derenowska who ran 50 miles and Sathya Thuraisamy who also ran 50 miles.

Run for the Trees is a fun, personal challenge event for runners and walkers alike, to keep you active as the novelty of the new year begins to wear off. this challenge can be completed anywhere and leaves a positive footprint on the planet as the more miles we cover, the more trees will be planted.

They also held a team event on 18th Feb 2022 with 18 Managers and 6 children (who were family members). They were planning on walking around 100 miles on the day as team. However; storm Eunice had other ideas and for safety reasons the walk had to be cut short and the team walked just 12 miles.

Though it is behind us now, 2021 was difficult for people and businesses worldwide. During these uncertain times, ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services have stayed committed to supporting our staff through the challenges of the last year. It doesn’t take much, and can just be in the little things. For example, before Christmas last year, ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Swansea continued its annual tradition of hand delivering a box of chocolates to each of its 250 staff members at their place of work. This was a small token of appreciation for its staff for their work throughout the year, and to wish them a Merry Christmas. However, due to the pandemic and Swansea’s ever-growing staff, the team decided to go the extra mile and do things a little differently and sent every member of staff a ServiceMaster branded chocolate bar in the post. But that wasn’t all, just like Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a select number of these chocolates had a winning raffle ticket inside that had a combined value of over £450.00! The lucky member of staff just had to call into the office and quote the code on the ticket.

One of the winners decided to spend her winnings on extra physio for her grandson, another decided to finish off her Christmas shopping, and another waited for her son to arrive home before opening the chocolate (as he is a Charlie in the Chocolate Factory Fan) and was delighted to find a winning ticket.

The top winner was Carly Morris who works in a Sports Centre and a Doctor Surgery in Neath, and she was kind enough to send the below photo.

ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Swansea’s staff were overjoyed by this gesture, and the branch are looking forward to doing the same in December of this year.

Siva Kugathas, owner of ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services AAA has completed the 16 mile YMCA DownsLink Challenge to help raise money for this worthwhile cause. Siva was supported by some of his management team, Claudia, Alexandra & Dominika who joined him along the way.

In total 140 people completed the challenge that was held over a full weekend and have collectively raised over £15,000 so far.
